Camcorder Microphone Built-in vs. External Microphone
Camcorder Microphone! Using an external microphone is always better than using the camcorders built-in microphone.
Another accessory which you may want to consider buying is an external camcorder microphone!
Disadvantages of the Built-In Camcorder Mics!
If you have been involved in a lot of video recordings, you would have realized by now that the camcorders built-in microphone has many short-comings.
Be it any kind of video recording, a camcorder’s built-in stereo microphone will invariably capture more sounds than we really desire. There will always be cases where in it would capture audio that is not needed.
If you are serious about your video work, you should consider buying a more specialized microphone for camcorders. It will really help you narrow down the audible field within your footage.
Advantages of Using External Camcorder Microphone!
If you are involved a lot in recording people’s personal stories or recording scripted dialogue, an ideal way to capture the audio is to use one of the following.
Use a personal microphone which will need to be attached to an item of the speaker’s clothing
Use a directional microphone which will sit on the top of the camcorder
The first one is usually uncomforting to the subject, so you may decide to buy an external (plug-in) microphone, which will operate on top of or near the camcorder when recording.
The main advantage of using external camcorder microphones is to narrow down the audible field within your footage!
Before you get yourself an external microphone for camcorder, check whether your camcorder has input sockets for the microphone as well as for headphones. If your camcorder doesn’t have a microphone jack input, it might have a hot accessory shoe to which an external mic can be attached.
Note: When you are recording with an external microphone, you should always monitor what you are recording with the help of the headphones. Once the external microphone is connected, the built-in microphone of the camcorder will not work (it cancels out). So if there is some issue, you could end up with no recording at all.
